Dedicated Waste Recycling

INCREASES in landfill tax will mean a rapid increase in costs for businesses in the next few years – unless they handle their waste more efficiently.

Currently, the landfill tax escalator rises by £3 per tonne each year, but the Chancellor has revealed that from April 2008 it will rise by £8 per tonne until 2010-2011. With the shortage of landfill sites and the frequent introduction of new legislation, this will severely restrict the amount and type of waste going for landfilldisposal.

“We will see waste going to landfill decrease with the introduction of Pre-Treatment Of Non-Hazardous Waste Prior To Landfill regulations due to come into force on October 30, 2007,”
says Judith Hollingworth, business development manager for Bakers Waste Service Limited.
“These regulations will put the onus on the business to segregate and recycle their waste on site. A lot of businesses do not realise that by recycling their waste they will not only see significant savings but may be entitled to a rebate for their material.”

Bakers Waste Services offer dedicated vehicles which operate within Leicestershire to collect and recycle glass and cardboard. Within the next few months, the company will also have vehicles collecting plastics. In addition, Bakers Waste Services offer businesses a free compliance audit where a representative from Bakers Waste will visit the site and advise companies of areas where cost savings can be made by recycling. They will also ensure that the company is fully compliant with all existing and forthcoming legislation.

“A lot of companies are not aware of current legislation and are disposing of flourescent tubes and computer screens as general waste and not as hazardous waste. We can offer advice and assist the customer where possible.”

Bakers Waste Services is based on Leicester's Knighton Fields Industrial Estate and collects waste from more than1,600 businesses across the city and county.
