One of the main problems within our environment is the huge amount of plastic pollution that we cause. Indian Prime minister Narendra Modi has called on the world to do more to tackle plastic pollution and other environmental issues, the Indian state of Tamil Nadu has announced that they are going to ban any use of plastic items and this includes non-biodegradable plastic bags, starting in January.
Narendra Modi said, “environmental degradation hurts the poor and vulnerable the most; it is the duty of each one of us to ensure that material prosperity does not compromise our environment”.
Around the world, 1 million plastic drinking bottles get purchased every minute. Every year the world will use up to 5 trillion disposable plastic bags. Half of the plastic that we buy will be single-use, so when we buy a plastic item it immediately becomes waste.
What are we doing to stop plastic pollution?
Theresa May has pledged that £61.4m will go to the commonwealth, this money will also help clear the ocean.
