Ralph Lauren usually opt for knitted cotton, silk, merino wool, synthetic fibres, and blends of natural and synthetic fibres as their choice of material, but this is all about to change.

In the run up to 2019’s Earth Day the clothing company launched the first-ever polo shirt amazingly made entirely from recycled plastic bottles! Alongside launching their new piece of clothing, the ‘Earth polo’, Ralph Lauren have announced they are committed in the aim of removing over 170 million plastic bottles from landfills and oceans by the year 2025.

The Earth polo takes pride in using a process which contains absolutely 0% water. It has been said that the brand have taken great care to preserve the quality and feel of the traditional polo shirt, whilst joining an eco-friendly approach to the manufacturing process.

The clothing brand has stated the shirts are “Designed with mother nature in mind”, with the colours available being: Stuart Green, White, Baby Blue and Navy Blue. The polo shirts are currently being retailed at £95 meaning the shirts are no more expensive than other polos and are available for both men and women.

First Mile are a recycling company that have shipped almost 200,000 pounds of plastic out of Haiti and Taiwan and have now turned their head towards working with fashion brands like Ralph Lauren. First Miles’ goal is to “increase environmental awareness and ultimately, to use waste in a productive way”, the Earth polo is a great place to start.

Currently, the Earth shirts are manufactured in Taiwan, where the bottles are collected and each shirt is produced from 12 bottles. The shirts were made in partnership with First Mile in aim for Ralph Lauren to reach their own goals by using 100% sustainably sourced cotton by 2025 and 100% recyclable or sustainably sourced packaging materials by the same year.
