Ralph Lauren usually use knitted cotton, silk, merino wool and synthetic fibres as their choice of material. But this is all about to change.
In the run-up to 2019’s Earth Day, the clothing company launched the first-ever polo shirt made entirely from plastic bottles! The brand is currently launching its new piece of clothing, the ‘Earth polo’. Ralph Lauren are also committed in the aim of removing over 170 million plastic bottles from oceans by 2025.
The Earth polo takes pride in using a process which contains absolutely 0% water. The brand has also taken great care to preserve the quality and feel of the traditional polo shirt. Whilst also joining an eco-friendly approach to the manufacturing process.
The clothing brand has stated the shirts are “Designed with mother nature in mind”. With a range of colours available like Stuart Green, White, Baby Blue and Navy Blue. The polo shirts are currently being retailed at £95 meaning the shirts are no more expensive than other polos. The shirts are also available for both men and women.
First Mile is a recycling company that have shipped almost 200,000 pounds of plastic out of Haiti and Taiwan and have now turned their head towards working with fashion brands like Ralph Lauren. First Miles’ goal is to “increase environmental awareness and ultimately, to use waste in a productive way”, the Earth polo is a great place to start.
Currently, the Earth shirts are manufactured in Taiwan and each shirt is produced from 12 bottles. The shirts were made in partnership with First Mile in aim for Ralph Lauren to reach their own goals by using 100% sustainably sourced cotton by 2025 and 100% recyclable or sustainably sourced packaging materials by the same year.
